Frequently asked questions

Everything about syncing your iTunes playlists to your Android phone with iTunes to Android.

About the app

What does iTunes to Android do?

It copies your iTunes and Apple Music playlists from your computer to your Android phone over Wi-Fi. What you listen to on your phone is added back to the play counts in iTunes.

When can I download version 2?

Version 2 is coming soon. The downloads for Windows and Mac, and the Google Play link for the phone app, will appear on the home page. Version 1 is no longer available.

Which computers and phones does it work with?

On the computer: Windows 10 or 11 with iTunes for Windows, or macOS 11 or newer with the Music app. On the phone: Android 11 or newer.

Do I need an FTP app?

No, not anymore since version 2. The new phone app takes care of it. An FTP server app on your phone does still work, but without play counts.

Does it work with Spotify?

It syncs your own music files from iTunes. If you play a song from your iTunes library in another app, that play is counted too.

Which music player do I need on my phone?

Any. Your songs appear in every music player on your phone, and playlists keep the same order as in iTunes.

What happens to songs I stop syncing?

If you want, they are removed from your phone. This is optional. Only new or changed songs are copied, so later syncs are quick.

Is this app made by Apple or Google?

No. iTunes to Android is an independent project. It is not made or endorsed by Apple or Google.

Installing and connecting

Where do I get the phone app?

From Google Play. The link will appear on the home page when version 2 is out.

My computer can’t find my phone. What should I check?

Check that both are on the same Wi-Fi and that the phone app is open with sync switched on. On guest or office Wi-Fi, try a phone hotspot. You can also type in the address shown in the phone app.

Does it work on hotel, office or guest Wi-Fi?

Often not. These networks usually block devices from finding each other. A hotspot from your phone does work.

Do I need to pair every time?

No. You pair once with the 6-digit code. After that, open the phone app and press Sync.

Play counts

How are play counts counted?

A play counts after half the song or 4 minutes, in any music player, and only for songs from your iTunes library. The plays are added to iTunes at the next sync.

Play counts don’t work on my Windows computer. Why?

Play counts on Windows need iTunes for Windows. They don’t work with the newer Apple Music app for Windows.

What do I need to set on my Mac?

In the Music app, turn on Music › Settings › Advanced › “Share Library XML with other applications”.

Privacy and battery

Why does Android warn that the app can read my notifications?

That is Android’s standard text for the notification access setting. The app only reads the title, artist and album of what’s playing, keeps only songs from your iTunes library, and sends them only to your own paired computer. Your notifications are not read or stored.

Does my music go through the cloud?

No. Everything stays on your own network, between your phone and your computer. No account, no cloud, no tracking.

Does it drain my battery?

The play counter costs practically no battery, because it only reacts when a song changes. The “ready to sync” mode keeps Wi-Fi awake, and switches itself off after 15 minutes without syncing.
